Breeding Terms

SPARKS - The software program that enables Pure Bred Cleveland Bay breeders to know to exactly what degree their offspring will be related to all of the other individuals in the breed.

Live cover - Live cover is when the stallion physically mounts and breeds the mare. This method is preferable when using an older stallion who's semen motility may not withstand shipping.

AI- Artificial Insemination - AI is when a stallion's semen is placed in a mare by a vet. Most breeders prefer this method because it ensures the physical safety of both mare and stallion.

Breeding Contract - An agreement between mare and stallion owners with the intent of creating an offspring. The best breeding contracts are very clear on each participants needs and expectations.

Booking Fee - A deposit or fee charged by the stallion owner when reserving a stallion for the breeding season. Most booking fees are non-refundable.

Equitainer - The container most used in transporting semen. Hamilton Research, Inc. (HRI) is a pioneer in the field of transported, cooled semen. As the developer of the Equitainer, they have been at the forefront of the transported semen field since its inception.

Mare Care - A term used when a mare is shipped to the stallion owner for breeding. It usually covers the cost of board only.

LFG - Live Foal Guarantee - A guarantee given to the mare owner that basically states that if the foal does not stand and nurse, subsequently dying, the mare owner can repeat the breeding at no or little cost. A Vet's Certificate is usually required by the stallion owner within a reasonable time limit.

Breeder's Certificate - A document stating the legitimacy and date of the mare-stallion breeding. Most registries require a breeder's certificate, but having one does not imply that the foal will be eligible for registration. Each registry's requirements are different.
